Why we dont use M.D.F

We do not use M.D.F to construct any of our staircases as it is easily susceptible to movement caused by temperature  and humidity changes.

There are many pros and cons of M.D.F, but these are the main reasons we do not use it for staircase construction:-

  •  M.D.F has a wax protective surface which if machined will reveal  its fragile and vulnerable interior fibers which will compromise the  materials integrity.
  •  M.D.F is not water-resistant and can swell and warp when exposed to moisture.
  •  M.D.F does not hold screws well, especially when used to connect the tread and riser.
  •  Some M.D.F products contain formaldehyde, a volatile organic  compound (VOC), which can be a health concern for some people. In  production and machining this generates a lot of dust, which can be a  health hazard.
  •  While M.D.F is strong for its density, it is not as strong as solid wood.
  •  M.D.F is easy to damage and will fur on edges that have been knocked.
